As the sequel of The Longest Journey, this game is set almost ten years after the concluding happenings of the first game. The storyline starts with Zoe Castillo, the narrator of the story, who is in a state of coma. Zoe tries to remember what led to her this vulnerable and miserable state. She was an inhabitant of Stark world, a college dropped out who had no direction of what she would do with her. The problem started when Zoe got to know that her ex-boyfriend who was a journalist had suddenly gone missing. She felt that she would do whatever it takes to trace him. Pressured under the conscience of moral responsibility, Zoe took the mission of finding the clues that could help her find him. In the meanwhile, a little girl named Faith who had been a subject of experimental research started to scare Zoe by the medium of TV screens. Every time she appeared on the screen, she brought a message that Zoe must find and save April. Unfamiliar of who April was, Zoe started asking a few people about her. As soon as she found out the truth about April, Wati agents made her fall into the sleep so that she could travel into the magical realm of Arcadia. Upon finding April there, she requested her to join the search for her friend to which April didn’t agree. April told her that Arcadia needs her more as she has a task of fighting against the mighty Azadi Empire. She further explained that one of the Azadi warrior, Kian, has been funded to kill her so she must find him before and kill him instead. Saddened over this news Zoe returned to Stark only to be captured by the Azadi soldiers and brought back to Arcadia. April upon learning this, rushed to rescue Zoe. There she met Kian too with whom she had an argument over the brutal schemes of Azadi Empire. She frees Zoe and suggests her to take the help of Brain Westhouse and Crow for her mission. As the team of these members embarked on their journey of finding Zoe’s ex-boyfriend, the White Dragon showed up and told them that April had been killed by Azadi Soldiers while Kian was arrested with a charge of treason upon him for protecting April from assassination. As Zoe woke up in Stark, Faith told that just like her, she is also created by Chang. After hearing this, Chang injected her with Morpheus that led her into the state of coma. This final incident brings the story back to where to where it originally started.
The game consists of three main leading characters that are Zoe, April and Kian who are also the only playable characters in the game. Dreamfall: The Longest Journey can be played from the perspective of each of these characters. This lets the gamer finds out how each of these contributes towards the development of the plot and how their fates ultimately turn out in the story. Thus, these multiple perspectives add to the richness of the storyline and let the gamer observe things from different angles. Zoe and Kian appear as new characters in this part of the series along with some other new supporting characters as well. One of such most important supporting character is of Faith who is one of the creations of Chang. In the story, she informs Zoe of various important messages. Some characters from the previous part appear again in Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, for instance, Brain Westhouse who agrees to help Zoe find out her friend, Crow who befriends Zoe on her mission and White Dragon who informs Zoe and her supporters about the death of April.
Coming back towards the two new leading characters that is Zoe and Kian their journey is mind-blowingly adventurous. Zoe bears a striking similarity with April in being an average citizen in Stark. With her determination and a sense of moral responsibility, she takes up a difficult task upon herself despite knowing that she had no training in self-defence. The presence of strong and heroic female characters in The Longest Journey series gives a general message that women are capable of doing all those things that men can. Kian, on the other hand, is a rebellious character who questions the set of believes he had been taught for all of his life. Thus, it can be said that this game is one of the best games of its age for building up characters outside the stereotypical norms—it is truly amazing for its unconventional characters.
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey has won a number of E3 awards for being the best video game of its type. It not only highly acclaimed among the game but also by the critics. Gamespy.com is of the view: ‘An amazing trip with some of the most fascinating characters you will ever meet…’
